Filing Your Homestead Exemption
π‘ Homestead Exemption π‘
Once you have updated your address on your DL, you are eligible to apply for your Homestead Exemption.
Completing this with the appraisal district will provide future savings on your property tax bills, so be sure to complete online or send in via mail. Once you file this form with the county, you will not need to repeat the process again next year.
Many companies will be sending solicitations to complete on your behalf (or have already reached out to do so), IGNORE THESE and please save your money! Feel free to shoot me a text/picture/call if you want to double check with me before trashing those letters, they do look official!\
The application form is self-explanatory for the most part, but feel free to reach out with questions.
Most counties will require supporting documentation in the form of a driver license / government issued i.d. with matching address of the property. So make sure you've updated your DL before beginning this process.
Remember Texas is a Non Disclosure State, so you are not required to disclose the sales price of your home with the taxing authorities (you may have already received very official looking request asking what you paid, you do not need to disclose - again, feel free to shoot me a text or call if you have any questions).
We also included a handy PDF outlining this process from our friends at Independence Title - see attached.
